3 March 2023

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the City of Tshwane (CoT) will co-host a two-day long Climate Change Research Conference at the Tshwane House Council Chamber, Pretoria, from 9 – 10 March.

The event will be hosted under the Tshwane Climate Action Plan theme: Sharing knowledge for effective and collaborative climate action.

The aim of the conference is to convene representatives from the local and international academic and research community to present their research that has resolutions on how the City of Tshwane can mitigate and adapt to climate change and to further stimulate new areas of research to enhance the implementation of the Climate Action Plan (CAP).

TUT and CoT, both locally rooted, globally aware, responsive and pragmatic institutions, are working together to share ideas, as well as debate current local research and development initiatives that will produce strategies addressing both the causes and consequences of climate change.

Some of the topics to be discussed at the conference include:

  • Scenario modelling to support strategic planning and implementation of climate change adaptation interventions.
  • Model development to improve high-impact weather prediction in the light of climate change.
  • Understanding the Drivers and Impact of the Urban Heat Island Effect in the City of Tshwane.
  • TUT-SARAO GeoStation monitoring network in Southern Africa.
  • Using Geospatial Technology for Environmental Monitoring in the City of Tshwane.
  • Waste characterization and composition analysis from Tshwane Municipality landfill sites in South Africa.
  • The role of cities in transitioning the economy through South Africa’s JETP deal.
  • A coalescence of sustainable development goals and disaster risk reduction in the City of Tshwane.
  • City of Tshwane Climate Action Plan 2050: A blueprint for building climate resilient communities.
  • Creating resilient cities - one street at a time.
