The IID is a professional body representing practicing professional interior architects, interior designers, interior decorators, suppliers, and educational institutions in the Interior Design industry in Africa. It is dedicated to establishing, promoting, and maintaining expertise, professionalism, sound business practice, and high standards throughout the industry. Membership to the IID indicates your status as a qualified, experienced, and ethical practicing professional.
Speaking about her election, Sharon says: "This means a lot to me because it not only adds value to my CV, leadership skills, and tertiary studies, but also allows me to build connections and expand my network in a way that I would not have had without the IID. It is proof that I am heading in the right direction and that I am doing a good job at it. I feel grateful and proud of myself, and I would like to make the IID proud of me and TUT."
Bongani agrees by saying: "It is a huge honour as it adds more value and experience to my career and to the Interior Design field, not just in the country but on the continent as well. I am grateful to be part of a professional body that represents interior designers out there."
Sharon and Bongani, who will serve on the IID for two years, will be responsible for advancing the ideals of the IID and also encouraging student membership, amongst others.
The selection process worked as follows: Four names were handed to the IID by Clifford Moleko, Head of WIL at the Department of Interior Design. Then, the nominees had to produce a three-minute video of themselves, explaining why they should be considered, how their selection will benefit the IID, and how they will assist fellow students.
In congratulating Sharon and Bongani, Inge Newport, Head of the Department of Interior Design, says: "Membership positions such as these for the IID are prestigious and we are extremely proud of Sharon and Bongani for being selected. TUT is the largest residential university in South Africa, so it is hugely beneficial for us to be represented on a national platform like this. Our students are now in a position to receive guidance directly from industry and offer their advice from the students’ perspective. TUT is working hard to produce future-ready graduates who have a positive societal impact, and this is one way in which the Department of Interior Design can contribute to that goal."
