Motlhabane conference shine spotlight on importance of men sharing their feelings

The Directorate of Student Governance and Leadership Development hosted its annual 2022 Motlhabane Men Empowerment Seminar at the TUT Pretoria Campus-TB Hall on Saturday, 30 July 2022.

The seminar opened a platform for men to share lessons, knowledge, ideas and experiences, that will help build and enrich their lives. It was attended by 400 male students from all six TUT campuses and its theme for this year was “Moving men from good to Great”.

Activities included 10 keynote speakers, panel discussions, breakaway workshop sessions, music performances and opportunities to interact with peers and professionals.

Thabo Molefe, popularly known as Tbo Touch, a radio personality, media mogul and entrepreneur gave a talk on entrepreneurship and success.

“God has already paved the way, but it takes you as an individual to pave your own way and walk into it with every resilience and every aggression you will need and say to yourself that even though you don’t know where you are going, you will find your own way,” said Molefe. 

Ntsikelelo Mzibomvu, who is an author, visual artist and podcaster talked about toxic masculinity. ‘’We are socialized to solve our problems through violence and that is a problem, we need to stop using violence as a means of solving problems and reimagine what masculinity means for us as men and how we handle conflict” said Ntsikelelo.

South African musician, DJ, podcaster, radio host, author and entrepreneur Sbusiso Leope, popularly known as DJ Sbu delivered spoke about technology and how it has advanced how people work and create businesses.

He said: “You guys are living in the most amazing time ever. You do not have to work hard as we did in the past because you have the internet. Look at MacG who currently has the biggest Podcast in the continent right now. You are blessed to be in an institution like TUT right now in 2022. The only thing you need to do now is to adjust your mindset”.

Lindani Mthethwa, TUT third year Journalism student who attended the seminar detailed his thoughts about the event. ‘’I have learnt a lot today, I’ll take all the advices and surely I’ll become a better man,” said Mthethwa.

The Director for Student Governance and Leadership Development, Dr Gugulethu Xaba closed it off with these remarks.

"I feel happy because I can see that, it is the Lord that took us this far, we’ve been doing this since 2005 and it’s been because of the Lord, thanks to the SGLD facilitators, speakers and to the male students,” Xaba added.
