TUT athletes shine at two championships

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) athletics team absolutely raised the bar at the recent Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Championships and the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Championships. These competitions took place in Mauritius (8 – 12 June) and Kenya (6 – 12 June) respectively.

Athletics star, Sokwakhana Zazini, won a gold medal in the men’s 400m hurdles, while Banele Shabangu was triumphant in the 4x100m relay, winning a gold medal at the CAA Championships in Mauritius.

Although the team slowed down a bit on their winning streak at the 10th All African Championships at the Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya,TUT earned a second place overall, while the TUT women’s team won Gold.

Individual performances at the All-African Championships:

Day 1 Results:

  1. Simonay Weitsz: 1 500m = Silver Medal
  2. Gezelle Magerman: 400m = Gold Medal
  3. Angelique Strijdom: 400m = Silver Medal
  4. Mpontsheng Sekese: 100m = Silver Medal

Day 2 Results:

  1. Simonay Weitsz: 800m = Gold Medal
  2. Gezelle Magerman: 100Mh = Gold Medal
  3. Angelique Strijdom: 200m = Gold Medal
  4. Beatrice Themani: 3 000Msc = Silver Medal
  5. Mpontsheng Sekese: 200m = Bronze Medal
  6. Tsholofelo Zwane: 10 000m = Bronze Medal
