SA Parliament congratulates Mokoka on breaking athletic world record

The South African Parliament has congratulated Stephen Mokoka, Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Athletics Coach who made history when he broke the 50 kilometers world record at the Nedbank Runified Series in Gqeberha, on 6 March 2022.

Stephen Mokoka.

Honourable Lechesa Tsenoli, Acting Speaker of the National Assembly said Mokoka’s record-breaking time of 2:40:13 is nearly four minutes faster than the inaugural world record set by Ethiopia’s Ketema Negasa. World Athletics has recognised it as the new official world record.

“We acknowledge that Mokoka has won numerous national titles during his running career and has represented South Africa at three Olympic Games. His achievement is even more spectacular, considering it was the first time that he competed in the 50 kilometers race. On behalf of the South African Parliament, we congratulate Stephen Mokoka and the University on achieving this world record milestone. We wish him well in all his future races,” said Honourable Tsenoli.

Mokoka’s resilience sets him apart from his counterparts as he continuously flies the TUT flag higher.

Mokoka couldn’t contain his excitement at Parliament’s praise. “I am truly humbled. A mention from Parliament, in particular the National Assembly, is a dream come true. There is no greater feeling than being acknowledged by your own country. This is absolutely momentous and I am eternally grateful,” said Mokoka.

TUT’s Directorate of Sport and Recreation also expressed excitement and pride on parliament’s recognition. According to the Directorate recognition for one of our legends is extremely motivating, especially in view of the work they do on the ground preparing for such successes.
