Libraries telling powerful stories: TUT celebrates SA National Library Week

Stories are used to share news, change viewpoints, keep traditions alive and transfer knowledge.  Since 1818, when the first library was established, libraries and librarians has been central in collecting, preserving and sharing stories. Stories contribute to all parts of life and can change the future for the better.

In celebration of the National Library Week (20 – 26 March), the TUT Library and Information Services (LIS), in collaboration with the Library and Information Association of South Africa and the Gauteng North Branch (LIASA GNB) hosted a stimulating story telling event at the Pretoria Campus on Friday, 24 March 2023. 

Following this year’s theme of Libraries: Telling powerful stories, stimulating and thought-provoking stories were told by impressive storytellers that included Kepi Madumo, National Librarian and CEO at the National Library of South Africa, Mandla Ntombela, former LIASA and AfLIA President, Currently IFLA Governing Board Member & Nevada LMS Chief Sales Officer and Keoagile Warie, a renowned local artist and Takalani M, National bestselling author and self-published novelist, to name a few.

The TUT Choir, with their known outstanding singing performances, added further value and flavour to a great story telling event, which also highlighted the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.

Keoagile Warie, a local artist who loves cultural storytelling, born from his love for cultural books and stories.
 Takalani M, former student of TUT who shared her story on how difficult matters can be managed to change lives for the better.
