Prof Anish Kurien announced Acting Director for the TUT Artificial Intelligence hub

Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, Vice-Chancellor and Principal announced the secondment of Acting Director for the TUT Hub of the Artificial Intelligence Institute of South Africa (AIISA).

“It gives me great pleasure to announce Prof Anish Kurien as Acting Director of the TUT Hub of the Artificial Intelligence Institute of South Africa (AIISA). Last year the Ministry of Communication and Digital Technologies launched AIISA, together with TUT and the University of Johannesburg (UJ),” he said.

Prof Anish Kurien, a full Professor in Electrical Engineering, is an internationally acclaimed researcher, specialising in next generation wireless communication networks. He has received various Industrial and International grants amounting to over twenty million rands (R20,000,000) with industrial partners such as Telkom SA Ltd, Nokia South Africa, CSIR, NRF/DSI, TETA, Erasmus+ Grants, and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and through the French Embassy in South Africa. 

Prof Kurien is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest technical professional organisation dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. 

With, a Doctoral degree in electrical engineering specialising in telecommunication technology, Prof Kurien is an expert in digital transformation of networks and the digitisation of economies.

Since 2010, he has been the Node Director of the French South African Institute of Technology (F’SATI), a French-South African bilateral program that has been in existence since 1997. 

So far, Prof Kurien has supervised and co-supervised over 39 postgraduate students to completion. He has contributed to over 100 publications in journals, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, book chapters, one book, and a patent. His current research interests include the domains of wireless communications, radio resource management, and mobile network optimization.
