On 8 April 2024, Prof Tshilidzi Marwala, the University of Cambridge-trained artificial intelligence expert whose work and ideas are celebrated worldwide will receive the highest academic accolade at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering (Doctor Technologiae Honoris Causa). This recognition comes on the back of his exceptional academic leadership and great strides made in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

In a timely announcement coinciding with Human Rights Day and the commemorative Human Rights Month in South Africa, the Department of Visual Communication, Faculty of Arts and Design, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), proudly announced its collaboration with the esteemed exhibition Women's Rights Are Human Rights. Organised and curated by Elizabeth Resnick, Professor Emerita of Graphic Design at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, USA, the exhibition will be a central feature of the TUT Faculty of Arts and Design annual Arts Festival this coming September 2024.

A delegation from the Tshwane University of Technology, led by Dr Grace Kanakana-Katumba, Executive Dean at the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE), along with Dr Vathiswa Papu-Zamxaka, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Engagement, recently hosted colleagues from the Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) in the Netherlands, for talks on potential research collaboration and opportunities for student and staff exchange programmes. Their visit followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TUT and THUAS in October 2023.

The Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) solar electric vehicle project, developed by the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE), has received international recognition for its contribution to renewable energy and research on efficient transportation for the future. The team recently received a prestigious research grant of 50,000 GBP (R1,195,735.50) as part of an existing partnership between TUT and the University of Southampton (UoS) in the United Kingdom.

The Department of Basic Education launched Lethabong High School in Soshanguve as a special school for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Members of TUT’s GAMMA® team were invited by the MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane and the Principal of Lethabong High, Mmaphefo Malope, to attend the launch. TUT’s team was represented by several lecturers from the School of Education, in the Faculty of Humanities.

The Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) collaborated with the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) in the United Kingdom in hosting a six-hour workshop on the Role of Project-based learning (PBL) in Engineering Education. The workshop explored the concept of Conceive Design, Implement and Operate (CDIO). The objective was to highlight the project-based approach, which is necessary to develop prerequisite skills for Electric Vehicles Manufacturing. The workshop covered the successful implementation of the CDIO approach to enhance the students’ experience and industry-readiness in the UK.

The Arts Campus recently buzzed with energy as Postgraduate Diploma in Design students immersed themselves in a dynamic three-week research boot camp from 26 February to 14 March 2024. The Postgraduate Diploma in Design is a unique transdisciplinary programme that includes students from Commercial Photography, Fashion Design, Integrated Communication Design and Interior Design.

The Tshwane University of Technology and CSIR Cannabis Hub has been granted two hemp permits: one for cultivation and commercialisation and the other for research purposes. The permits will allow for the cultivation of hemp on up to 20 hectares of land.
