Exceptional leadership took centre stage as the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Directorate of Student Governance and Leadership Development (SGLD) honoured student leaders who have shown ongoing commitment to service at the Ga-Rankuwa Campus. The awards ceremony recognised the individuals who consistently step forward to advocate for their peers and strengthen student life.
The event also highlighted the value of student involvement in extracurricular activities and the critical role leadership plays in shaping campus culture. Delivering the keynote address, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Finance, Prof Polly Mashigo commended the recipients for their dedication, confidence and ability to represent students with purpose and integrity.
“You are the THINK TANKERS that are resourceful in tackling issues as they arise and find suitable solutions. Acting as mediators in conflicts among students or between students and Campus Management, navigating through student perspectives and finding common ground,” she said.

Prof Mashigo also shared her passion for elevating women in leadership. She encouraged female leaders to continue breaking barriers despite the challenges of male-dominated environments, reminding them that resilience is essential. She noted that many young women hesitate to contest SRC elections because they fear being viewed as less capable, urging them to challenge this perception.
Thabiso Mbewe, SGLD Acting Head of Department, praised the honourees for demonstrating strong ethical values alongside their leadership qualities. He stressed the importance of balancing academics with leadership roles, saying, “True leadership is reflected not only in service and achievement but also in discipline and academic excellence.”
Reflecting on his term, 2024/2025 SRC President, Tshepo (Terri) Malebye talked about his growth and gratitude, thanking the directorate and students for the trust placed in him and his Council.
The ceremony once again reminded attendees of the important role that student leadership plays in shaping the heartbeat of campus life at TUT.
