A Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) graduate is making quite an impression in the South African music scene after earning three nominations at the Munghana Lonene Xitsonga Music Awards. The 25-year old Cinna Maswanganyi from Giyani in Limpopo, has been recognised in three major categories, proving that academic success and musical talent can thrive side by side.

TUT Alumna and music artist, Cinna Mpaka

Maswanganyi, a Public Sector Finance alumna, who performs as Cinna Mpaka, is nominated for Best Xitsonga Female Artist, Best Xitsonga Newcomer of the Year and Best Xitsonga Album of the Year. Her contribution to Xitsonga music continues to grow as she shares storytelling and creativity rooted in a passion she developed as a child.

Balancing her studies and music career came with discipline. While completing her diploma, she used school holidays for studio sessions to ensure her recordings were completed before the semester began. This careful planning allowed her to excel academically without sacrificing her artistic goals.

Looking back on her journey, Maswanganyi said she was really grateful for her family and manager, who are her support system. Known for performing in traditional Xitsonga attire, she draws inspiration from icons such as Sunglen Chabalala while shaping her own distinct sound and identity. “These nominations show that I am doing great in music and that I am recognized. This motivates me to keep going,” she said.

Inspired by the growth of fellow artists, she believes that seeing others succeed fuels her own ambition. With plans to use her qualification and further her studies, Maswanganyi hopes her story will inspire aspiring artists to pursue education and music with equal commitment.
