Lucas Khashane’s journey from repeating Grade 10 twice to graduating cum laude with a Master’s in Industrial Engineering is a powerful story of resilience and determination. The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) graduate received his degree during the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Spring Graduation Ceremony held in October 2025.

Lucas Khashane received his Master’s Degree cum laude in Industrial Engineering at FEBE’s Spring Graduation Ceremony, in October 2025.

Originally from Mutamvuni Village in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, Khashane overcame financial hardship and family responsibilities to achieve academic excellence. His persistence has now earned him admission to pursue a PhD in Industrial Engineering at the University of Johannesburg in 2026.

Khashane’s Master’s research, titled “A System Dynamics Approach to Enhance Localisation of Railcar Components Manufacturers in South Africa,” applies system dynamics modelling to strengthen local manufacturing, improve water distribution and address rural development challenges. His work demonstrates how data-driven modelling can tackle issues such as water scarcity, energy shortages and unemployment.

“Growing up in a rural community, I witnessed challenges related to water scarcity and underdeveloped infrastructure. My exposure to industrial systems made me realise that system dynamics could help address these challenges through evidence-based modelling,” he said.

Recognised as Overall Achiever at both Faculty and Departmental levels in 2023 and 2024, Khashane plans to build a career in academia and applied research, focusing on sustainable industrial growth and rural development. He also hopes to lecture, supervise postgraduate students and collaborate with government and industry to apply his findings in real-world systems.

His supervisor, Dr Tshifhiwa Nenzhelele, commended his commitment and innovation. “Lucas is an exceptional student whose research carries deep social relevance, especially in addressing South Africa’s industrial and infrastructural challenges. His success proves that perseverance and purpose can overcome any limitation,” he said.

Beyond academics, Khashane leads a basketball-based youth empowerment initiative that integrates sports, mentorship and education—further reflecting his belief in holistic community development.
