Students at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FoICT) got an industry-level boost when the Hacker Society hosted its “How to Be a Step Ahead: Cloud Computing and Cybersecurity” event, featuring top experts from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and IBM.

The high-energy session gave students direct access to insider knowledge from two of the world’s tech giants, with a focus on how to thrive in the fast-paced and constantly evolving technology sector.

“By leveraging what they learn in class, together with the resources and tools provided during this event, students can position themselves to be two to three times more competitive compared to those who only focus on coursework,” said Moeketsi Kema, Hacker Society Chairperson.

More than just a lecture, the event challenged students to think beyond textbooks and tap into real-world insights that employers are looking for. In today’s market, graduates need both strong academic foundations and hands-on experience to stand out - particularly in high-demand fields like cloud computing and cybersecurity.

With industry expertise, practical exposure, and the encouragement to embrace lifelong learning, the Hacker Society reaffirmed its mission to prepare students for a tech industry that rewards adaptability, innovation and readiness for the real world.
