In commemoration of Mandela Day, the Directorate of Extracurricular Development (DED) at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Ga-Rankuwa Campus, in collaboration with Student City Residence, visited the Ga-Rankuwa based Korwe Orphanage on 19 July 2025 to carry out a community outreach programme.

The initiative aimed to spread kindness and give back to the community by spending the day with the 250 children housed at the orphanage. A group of 60 TUT students engaged with the children through games, songs, and generous servings of snacks, while also handing out toiletry packs to each child.

Nkosinathi Marobela, Administrative Assistant at DED and leader of the outreach, emphasised the ongoing importance of community service: “Giving back shouldn’t be reserved for Mandela Day alone. It should be a regular act of kindness, no matter how small. These moments remind us of Mandela’s enduring legacy,” he said.

The toiletry items were donated as part of the Mr and Miss TUT contest at the Ga-Rankuwa Campus, underscoring the active role students play in uplifting their communities.
