A strategic partnership between the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the Banking Sector Education and Training Authority (BankSETA) continues to bear fruit, most recently through a digital skills development workshop hosted at Makgongoana High School in Limpopo. The initiative, which took place at the end of June 2025, empowered Grade 12 learners with critical digital competencies and career guidance.

Launched in 2021, the TUT-BankSETA collaboration aims to boost digital training and skills development across the province. Spearheaded by the Department of Accounting in TUT’s Faculty of Economics and Finance, the project brought a two-phase, seven-day workshop to the school, benefiting 20 Grade 12 learners.

Bridging the gap between school and the future

The first phase of the workshop, held on 20 and 21 June, focused on career counselling and work readiness. This segment was supported by TUT’s Student Development and Support (SDS) Department, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), DHET (INDLELA) and Nedbank. These partners provided learners with insights into various career paths and post-school opportunities, helping them chart a course toward meaningful futures.

Phase two, held from 23 to 27 June, introduced learners to vital digital tools and concepts, including Microsoft Office applications and basic programming skills, which are foundational competencies for thriving in the digital economy.

Celebrating achievements and looking ahead

At a closing ceremony held on 12 July 2025 at Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane, the Head of TUT’s Department of Accounting, Fezile Ngcongwane, thanked Makgongoana High School for its support and commitment to the initiative.

“This programme was not only about digital skills and programming,” said Ngcongwane. “It was about showing you what is possible when we choose to show up, engage and take charge of our future. Some of you may still be finding your feet, but I am convinced we will all make it.”

Each learner received a certificate of participation and a tablet, tools that will help them reinforce their newly acquired skills and prepare for the digital demands of higher education and beyond.

BankSETA’s Regional Manager for Limpopo and Mpumalanga, Elelwani Netshituni, encouraged the learners to remain focused as they enter the final term of their school year. “Prepare well for your exams and never lose sight of your dreams,” she said. “Use the tablets wisely and ensure your university applications are submitted on time.”

Makgongoana High School Principal, Dr Shapule Modjaji, thanked the BankSETA and TUT, especially the team from the Department of Accounting. She also acknowledged the dedication of her teaching staff and encouraged both learners and educators to keep striving for excellence.

This workshop proves the transformative power of collaborative education initiatives, equipping young people in rural areas with the tools and confidence to shape their futures.
