A group of passionate Girls in Tech students from the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FoICT) at the Tshwane University of Technology's (TUT) coding journey got a major boost when they attended the recent Entelect Coding Workshop, hosted in partnership with Girl Code at Entelect’s Melrose Arch offices.
The one-day workshop immersed participants in cutting-edge front-end development practices, with a strong focus on React, a powerful JavaScript framework widely used for building interactive user interfaces. Attendees explored fundamental and advanced concepts, including JSX vs TSX, React Router, Redux and Hooks, all of which are essential tools in modern web development.
The workshop offered a comprehensive session on Git and GitHub, giving students valuable insights into version control and effective collaboration in software development projects. The workshop also introduced GitHub Desktop, a user-friendly graphical interface that simplifies working with repositories, ideal for those still getting familiar with Git commands. Participants learned how to clone, commit, pull, push and rebase projects directly from the desktop app.
Beyond the technical deep dive, the workshop served as a platform for networking and mentorship. The students had an opportunity to engage with industry professionals, ask questions and gain real-world insights into the life of a software developer.
“The experience was not just about acquiring new tools and skills, but also about empowerment. It reinforced our confidence, built a sense of community and sparked even more excitement for our futures as females in tech,” said Bathabile Mkhabela, a recent Multimedia Computing cum laude graduate.
Such events showcase the growing importance of industry-academic partnerships in preparing students for the demands of the digital economy and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
