Emerging voices step into the light at the 2025 Rostrum Roulette Festival
The Tshwane University of Technology’s Department of Performing Arts will proudly present the Rostrum Roulette Directing Festival and Applied Theatre from 11 to 14 June 2025. This longstanding tradition shines a spotlight on the bold, creative visions of student directors and will be held on the Arts Campus from 10:00 – 16:00 daily.
This year’s theme, “Gata Lesedi – Ghadanga u’Khanya – Kanda Tshedza”, speaks to a powerful journey of enlightenment, creativity and transformation. It is a celebration of breakthrough moments, when young artists bring their ideas from the shadows of the mind into the illuminating glow of the stage.
The festival provides a vibrant platform for novice directors to experiment, push boundaries and bring thought-provoking stories to life. Light, in this context, becomes both a literal and metaphorical force, symbolising knowledge, artistic discovery and the clarity found through performance.
The festival is a collaborative process with Technical Design students whose craftsmanship embellish the performances with theatrical optics that enhance the art of storytelling.
Audiences are invited to witness a dynamic showcase of fresh theatrical works that span a range of genres, from comedy and drama to socio-political explorations. These productions reflect the unique perspectives of young creatives and aim to spark dialogue, challenge norms and inspire change.
Whether you’re a theatre enthusiast, a curious first timer, or a seasoned industry professional, the Rostrum Roulette Festival offers something for everyone. This year’s edition also features exciting collaborations with Applied Theatre student facilitators, who will present interactive and inclusive productions catering to all age groups truly making this a festival for the whole community.
Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to support the next generation of South African theatre-makers as they step into the light – boldly, brilliantly and with vision.
