One of the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) own, Dr Lebogang Matholwane Mathole, made history on 24 March 2025, when she became the first recipient of a doctorate in Economics, specialising in Local Economic Development (LED) from the University of Johannesburg.
Dr Mathole, a Lecturer at the Department of Marketing and Tourism Management at the Mbombela Campus, is also an accomplished researcher and author, having published many articles in esteemed journals on topics related to marketing, tourism and business management. She has participated in countless global conferences, promoting South Africa's identity and culture.
Dr Mathole formed part of the LED programme's inaugural cohort in 2019, supported by a British Council grant for international collaboration. The programme included a meaningful visit to the University of Glasgow, strengthening UK-South Africa academic partnerships.

Her study was supervised by distinguished colleagues from multiple institutions: Prof Michael Osborne (University of Glasgow), Prof Nokukhanya Jili (University of Zululand) and Prof Marinda Pretorius (University of Johannesburg). Dr Mathole’s research focused on entrepreneurial strategies to promote locally produced luxury goods, using insights from consumer psychology and entrepreneurship to promote local economic development.
Her findings provide actionable strategies for entrepreneurs to build consumer trust and enhance market presence. Dr Mathole's pioneering work has also been recognised by the UK’s Pascal International Observatory, celebrating her remarkable achievements in the field.
According to Dr Mathole, she is deeply humbled and honoured by this achievement. “It is a touching reminder of the discipline required to execute a plan effectively. Moreover, it reinforces the profound truth that, regardless of my efforts in planning, true victory is ultimately bestowed on us by God,” she said.
She added that the study will contribute substantial value to a niche market of luxury goods that remains largely underdeveloped, particularly in the South African context. Furthermore, it highlights potential strategies aimed at enhancing job creation opportunities and essential skills acquisition for local entrepreneurs, enabling them to deliver superior quality goods to South African consumers and beyond.
