Hard work, dedication and a clear vision, a winning recipe for success, have defined the academic journey of Ntokozo Mthethwa, alumnus, Advanced Diploma in Operations Management student and author of a book titled “Conquering Your Years in Tertiary Education”, published in 2023.
According to Mthethwa, no student should be alone on the tertiary education journey Hence, recognising the challenges many students face when entering higher education, the book provides a practical guide for students on setting goals, staying focused and navigating University life successfully.
Living the TUT dream of preparing future-ready professionals for the workplace, Mthethwa goes out of his way to empower others by sharing his knowledge and experiences. Many readers have described the book as insightful and motivating, with Mthethwa explaining that he wanted to help students avoid common pitfalls and remain committed to their academic goals. “I know how overwhelming University life can be. I wanted to create something that could guide students to stay focused, motivated and enjoy success,” he said.
From his first year, the Cum Laude student set himself apart from the crowd by excelling in academics and leadership. He earned an impressive 78% average and received a Merit Award while also serving as Class Representative. Not slacking down, he once again improved his academic performance in his second year, achieving a 79% average and securing yet another Merit Award.
Leading by example, Mthethwa was selected Departmental Representative for Operations Management at the Faculty of Management Sciences in his third year.

Despite the additional responsibilities that accompany these leadership roles, his ability to balance his academic and leadership commitments, enabled him to complete his third year with an impressive 84% average.
Graduating Cum Laude with his Diploma earned him a well-deserved scholarship, enabling him to enrol for the Advanced Diploma.
He credits much of his success to the support he received from TUT, including mentorship and tutoring programmes that played a crucial role in his development.
“My journey has taught me that success is not just about talent but about discipline, consistency and making the most of the opportunities available,” he said.
