Research at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through seven strategic research niche areas. These areas aim to address South Africa’s challenges, drive economic development and deliver research that is locally impactful, nationally significant, and globally relevant, enhancing the University’s reputation and contributing to a better society.
Today, we look at the Niche Area in the Faculty of Arts and Design, Creative Industries and Cultural Discourses of the Global South. Under the leadership of Executive Dean, Prof Nalini Moodley-Diar, it investigates the relationship between economic development and cultural expression in Africa and Southern Africa’s economies. By examining how the Global South leverages its rich cultural heritage to create new industries and shape global narratives, this research highlights the transformative power of creativity in driving socio-economic progress.
Key research themes include:
- Global South Digital Platforms and Local Content: Exploring the rise of digital platforms and their role in amplifying local stories.
- Transnational Collaborations in Global South Creative Industries: Fostering partnerships to expand creative opportunities.
- Cultural Preservation and Innovation: Merging traditional and modern practices to sustain and innovate cultural heritage.
- Decolonising Creative Production: Challenging existing frameworks to promote more inclusive narratives.
- Creative Activism and Social Change: Leveraging art for advocacy and social impact.
- Environmental and Ecological Discourses in Global South Art: Addressing climate change through creative expression.

The research niche area also builds on the University’s legacy by merging two previous focus areas - Reconstruction of the Past and Crafting a New Multicultural South African Landscape through the Arts and Critical Studies in Visual Arts.
Aligned with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), this research addresses global challenges while driving creativity, innovation and sustainability across the global South.
