Sport Bursaries

​​It is the aim of the University to utilise these bursaries to recruit and retain students who have shown exceptional sporting achievements with an emphasis on priority codes as determined by the Directorate: Sport and Recreation.

Eligibility

  • Students apply for Sport Bursaries at the Directorate Sport and Recreation at the different learning sites and submit documentary proof of their sporting achievements.
  • Following due processes applications will be considered and achievement verified by the sporting officials at each campus and submitted to the Director of Sport and Recreation on the following dates annually:
  • 01 April (First semester) and
  • 31 August (Second semester)
  • Only performance up to 31 December of the previous year shall be taken into consideration.
  • Students who are recipients of bursaries shall be required to competitively participate in the chosen sport of the university and remain an active member of the club in the year of the allocation.
  • Academic progress is essential. If a student does not pass at least 50% of the number of subjects they are registered for, they shall not be considered the next year.
  • Students should apply for the bursary and they shall only be considered if they are registered for a National Diploma, B Tech, M Tech or a Doctorate.
Allocation Rules and Criteria
The performance of students and the value of the bursaries shall be considered in the following categories:

Maximum allocation: To be determined annually
D
  • Provincial (e.g. North Gauteng/ Limpopo Province) Age Group u/19, u/21, u/23
  • Provincial Senior B Team (Mpumalanga B Team, etc.)
  • SASSU Provincial Team (Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga​
Maximum allocation: To be determined annually
  • The Director Sport and Recreation and the Manager Sport and Recreation at every campus will be mandated to recommend bursaries to individuals at their discretion, based on performance.​
  • The amounts payable in each category, as well as the discretionary amount per campus shall be determined by the Sport and Recreation Executive Finance committee annually, based on the total budget allocated for sport bursaries in that particular year as informed by the Director: Financial Aid.
  • The names of all students who have been allocated bursaries shall be submitted to the Financial Aid Office of each campus with a copy to the Director Financial Aid for allocation. 
  • Discretionary allocations may also be paid directly to the student or Sporting Body concerned on recommendation by the Director Sport and Recreation in the following instances:
    • ​Special Awards e.g. Sport Person of the year etc.
    • Assistance with sport participation e.g. SASSU, Provincial, National etc.
  • Refunding of credit balances, if permissible shall be facilitated by Financial Aid if the student’s class fees have been paid in full.
  • A “Team Member” shall constitute a player, coach, technical official and manager.
