Study Counselling and Support

In a tertiary education environment academic performance is of paramount importance. Stepping into the challenging arena of higher education, students (especially first year students) can feel overwhelmed by the academic demands. Students are still used to the high school climate and start to realize that either they don’t have the study skills to cope with the academic challenges, or that their usual study methods are not adequate in coping with the tertiary environment.

SDS provides assistance to students who struggle with the challenging work load of higher education. Students therefore have  access to professional support to address these matters that are related to study skills development.

How to go about getting assistance:

First make an appointment at the SDS office situated on your campus for individual study sessions or study workshops (depending on the availability of study counselors).

  • The first session is an assessment of students’ study abilities using the LASSI (learning and study strategies interventory). This is done to identify the areas of concerns related to the students current study strategies. The student and study counselor will together decide on a plan of action to address these areas of intervention.
  • One-on-one study sessions with students in relation to the areas of concern identified during the assessment (LASSI) will then commence. A minimum of 4 sessions are scheduled but this can be extended depending on the individuals study needs.
  • During the last session a post LASSI is done to determine the progress of the student and possible more intervention if needed.
  • Alternatively three workshops will be scheduled of one hour each to address the basic principles of study skills development in a group format.

Intervention areas include:

  • Concentration
  • Information processing
  • Motivation/goals
  • Self testing strategies
  • Selecting main ideas
  • Study aids
  • Time management
  • Examination techniques

Important information

  • All (and only) registered TUT students are welcome to make appointments for study sessions
  • Students are encouraged to attend all the sessions as agreed with their study counselor, as non-attendance of sessions will hamper your progress
