Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science is TUT's leading research faculty and makes a substantial contribution every year to the total research output of the country. The Faculty is proud to have many rated researchers and lecturers of national and international repute who attract substantial financial support for research projects from outside funding agents such as the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Water Research Commission (WRC).
The various departments of the faculty offer a variety of study programmes in the fields of agriculture, health and natural sciences. Courses such as Biotechnology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Fire Technology, Food Technology, Geology, Mathematical Technology, Quality and Water Care are offered up to Master's and Doctorate level ensuring that all students can achieve their full academic potential.
In the field of agricultural sciences the faculty boats the largest training facility of its kind in South Africa and one of the largest in the Southern hemisphere. It is one of the few higher education institutions in the country to offer the full range of agricultural courses including:
Crop Production, Mixed Farming, Rural Development and Extension, Agricultural Management, Animal Production, Equine Science, Nature Conservation, Ecotourism Management, Game Ranch Management, Horticulture, Landscape Technology and numerous other specialised courses.
Given the large agricultural base of the South African economy, the Faculty is strategically placed to add to the creation of prosperity in the country and the SADC region. Acting as an education and research development hub, it attracts many students from neighbouring countries.
The faculty's health related course material is designed to address the needs of the community and industry. The subject content of every qualification is guided by an Advisory Committee, consisting of leading professionals from industry, and is presented by enthusiastic and competent staff. As with all the programmes within the faculty, Master's and Doctorate degrees can be obtained in the fields of Sport and Physical Rehabilitation Sciences, Environmental Health, Biomedical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Nursing and Pharmacy.
