Department of Office Management and Technology

The Department would like to welcome you in one of its undergraduate programmes, namely Commercial Practice or Office Management and Technology (offered up  to master's degree level).  After completing one of these programmes you will be able to follow a career as secretary or office professional whose major role is to assist a manager or managers.

As the new generation of managers are doing more and more of their own typing, an office professional or secretary can expect his or her role to be more that of an organiser, supervisor and trainer, rather than the bulk of the duties being typing. But this can and does differ from company to company.

The tasks could include many varied duties – research, typing, producing flyers, filing, dictaphone transcription, screening telephone calls, appointments, liaising with clients (and sometimes this includes handling difficult situations) and other staff members, attending meetings, taking minutes, composing letters, making travel bookings, supervising, training staff (including your boss), ordering flowers and gifts, and, of course, there will be some menial tasks too.

If you are helpful, trustworthy, reliable, honest, able to maintain confidentiality, have organisational skills, an immaculate appearance, good communication skills, good telephone etiquette, the ability to take instructions and carry them out, and the ability to type speedily and accurately, you could be a successful office professional.
