Three students from the Tshwane University of Technology were mugged and injured in three separate violent incidents at the Metro Rail station of the Pretoria (West) Campus this morning, 25 February 2016. Two students were robbed and injured during multiple stabbings and one was shot in what appeared to be theft related incidents. All three were admitted to hospital. Two of the students are in a critical condition.

The University is extremely concerned about these incidents and strongly condemns such attacks on its students.

Large numbers of TUT’s students and staff daily commute to campus using Metro Rail trains. The train station is in the public domain, however, in view of the risk to the safety of our staff and students, TUT Management will urgently engage with Metro Rail to mitigate the situation and ensure that the train station is safe guarded.

Prof Lourens van Staden, Vice-Chancellor and Principal expressed his shock and concern about the situation and extended his condolences to the families of the injured students. The University will monitor the condition of the students and provide support as far as possible.
