Prof Maggie Momba, African Science Hero of 2016.
The Tshwane University of Technology’s Prof Maggie Momba, SARChI Chair holder of Water Quality and Wastewater Management at the Faculty of Science, has been recognised as one of ten 2016 Science Heroes by Planet Earth Institute (PEI). 

As a charity working for the scientific independence of Africa, PEI always celebrate and recognises the contributions of amazing men and women who are making a difference in science on the continent.

According to PEI, Prof Momba is an enormously respected and influential scientist who is working tirelessly to further scientific knowledge in order to tackle the issue of human waterborne diseases in Africa.

Prof Momba, who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo is regarded by many as a generous scientist and a highly valued mentor to emerging leaders in her field. Growing up in the heart of Africa has taught her the need and privilege of having access to clean running water.

Prof Momba is a C1 rated Research Professor at the University and some of her research achievements include the International Award for “Outstanding Community Support” in 2004, a National Women in Water Award and the Vice Chancellors Senior Research Medal in 2005, Institutional Awards- Vice-Chancellor Female Senior Researcher of the year in 2012, Innovator of the year in 2012, Adviser World Health Organisation (Geneva) for Household Drinking Water, amongst others.
