The Industrial Physics course is unique to TUT. It has a specific focus on practical elements, unlike traditional universities where theory is the order of the day.
The students are prepared for industry as soon as they enrol. They are exposed to tours of organisations and guest lectures, which bring them multilateral views of the workplace, thus widening their scope of knowledge as technicians in training.
The course has two specialisation electives, namely Nuclear Technology and Photonics. These are fast growing fields, requiring sought after skills that can contribute to the economy of the country.
The coursework also includes Radiation protection, Vacuum technology, Industrial ventilation, Material science, Metrology, Photonics, Laser application and Computer Programming.
“The whole experience of developing and taking students through the study material has been very enjoyable. This course can only be found at this University and that makes it valuable,” said Prof Joseph Asante, Head of the Department.
One of the Department’s biggest challenges is assisting students with Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) placements. “We have to market this course rigorously to make sure industry is aware of our course and graduates,” he added.
If all goes according to plan, the Department will introduce the Advanced and Postgraduate Diploma programmes in January next year. The Department also plans to double its student intake.
